Children of the Chappa’ai 2: The Best Laid Plans

an unfinished sequel to Children of the Chappa’ai, a Stargate SG-1 AU story by Setcheti

Jack O’Neill stood atop the sand dune and looked out at…

Nothing, really.  More sand dunes.  Two suns.  His life.

His second life.  Or was it his third?  He really wasn’t sure.  The loose over-robe flapped around his ankles as a gust of wind flung sand up in the air, and he smiled.  The winds of Abydos carried a hint of spice that never failed to make him feel like an explorer living in the midst of ancient secrets at a journey’s successful end.

Ironically enough, that pretty much summed up his situation.  But Jack wasn’t complaining, no sir.  Being the commander in chief of an entire planet’s military forces sure as hell beat being an Air Force colonel back on Earth.  There were things he missed about Earth, sure, but he wasn’t going to unbury the Stargate just because a cup of coffee would be nice in the mornings or because he was curious about how his favorite hockey team was doing.  Jack had no illusions about his birth planet’s intentions toward his new home, not after the events of just over two years ago.

And if he ever started having illusions again, in a small pouch hanging around his neck rested the warped carcass of a used bullet that served to remind him of just what kind of people they’d left behind.

Another gust of wind tugged at him, just a little more forcefully than before, and successfully shook him out of his introspection.  Being able to read the winds was a very necessary survival skill on Abydos, something he, Kawalski and Ferretti had found out the hard way a few months after they’d first ‘relocated’ to the desert settlement, and right now the wind was warning him that a sandstorm might just be in his future.  Wrapping his robes a little more tightly around him to keep them from flapping, Jack headed back to the safety of the selbarta’s sheltering walls.
