Tod moaned slightly
as he awoke. It had been almost 10 centars since he
came out of the surgery. Not too long for brain surgery, but in a society where
broken bones could be healed with the touch of a button, it was nerve wracking
on the loved ones who had to wait and worry.
Trelan was used to
worrying, he had been scared for this big man on the biobed
for several yahrens now. The smaller man took a deep
breath and braced himself, he needed to be strong for Tod. There was no telling what would happen now. After all
of these yahrens of brain injury, the other man might
not remember what had happened. The thought of Tod’s
starting all over again, due to amnesia, made Trelan
want to crawl under the bed and cry.
The
large man moaned again and Trelan picked his hand up
and began rubbing it restfully. “It’s okay Tod,
you’re fine now.”
Turning
his head towards the sound, Tod opened his eyes,
looked up and blinked lazily. At first he didn’t see much of anything, the
anesthesia made his eyes blurry. Then he focused on the person standing beside
his bed and smiled. Not a sweet, innocent smile anymore. No,
a blindingly brilliant and most assuredly sexy smile.
“Lan.”
Trelan gasped at
the nickname. Tod hadn’t called him that in yahrens, not since the accident.
“T-Tod?” His voice was tremulous. The manager was afraid to hope.
“Yeah
Angel Eyes, I’m here.”
The pet
name cinched it and despite his best efforts, hope began to surge in Trelan’s heart. “Do you remember me?”
Tod frowned for a
moment and then his brow cleared. Eyes glowing he replied. “Yes, my love. I
do.”
Trelan clutched Tod’s hand tightly. He couldn’t seem to decide whether he
wanted to laugh or cry as his lover finally remembered him after all these yahrens.
The
smaller man had stood by his lover, who had been his lover in name only, and
mourned the loss. They hadn’t, couldn’t, be lovers. Tod
had been left with the mind of a 10 yahren old child.
Even if he had understood the concept of sex, Trelan
wouldn’t take advantage of such innocence.
Tears
won out and the smaller man buried his head in his lover’s shoulder and cried
out all the pain and fear he had felt. For the first time in a long time, he
could let go; someone else could be strong for him.
Tod wrapped his
free hand around the back of his lover’s head and whispered calming words to
his lover. The big man remembered both his old life and the half-life he had
lived for 4 yahrens. He knew what Trelan
had gone through when he didn’t recognize him and he cried too.

Doctor Salik went back into his office and closed the door, to
give the two lovers some privacy. The doctor hadn’t realized they were lovers.
Before the surgery, Trelan acted more as a friend
than a lover. But now, it was obvious how much they cared for each other.
Slowly,
the knowledge began to slide out of his head. The sheer volume of the
information necessary for the risky surgery would have crushed the doctor’s
psyche if it had been left in for very long.
In the
back of his mind, he knew that something spectacular had happened here today.
The idea that he couldn’t repeat it upset the doctor, but he thought of the two
men outside and was glad it happened the once.

Strife
and Cupid smiled at each other.
“Come
on baby, let’s go home.”
The God
of Mischief turned from the God of Love and looked over at the two lovers. Trelan had lain down on the bed beside his lover and they
were both asleep. Their faces were peaceful.
“Yeah,
let’s go home.”
Strife
spared one look over his shoulder, back at the man who so resembled his uncle.
“Good bye, Almost Ares.”
Two
sets of bright sparkles glittered through the room. There was a brilliant flash
and they were gone. On the air a whisper echoed.
“But, ya know, I might just come back heah.”
A
slightly maniacal giggle faded away.
